Late summer is the optimal time to begin planning for stockpiling tall fescue—an effective forage management strategy that extends the grazing season and reduces reliance on stored feed during winter. Stockpiling refers to the practice of accumulating fall forage growth by deferring grazing, allowing for strategic use of high-quality standing forage during the dormant season. Tall fescue is particularly well-suited for stockpiling due to its cool-season growth pattern, durability, and ability to maintain forage quality after frost. When managed correctly, stockpiled fescue can provide excellent grazing through late winter.

Recommended Stockpiling Protocol:
- Reset the pasture by grazing or mowing to a height of approximately 3–4 inches by mid-August.
- Apply 35 to 50 lbs of nitrogen per acre. Choose an appropriate nitrogen source based on cost, expected rainfall, and soil conditions.
- Defer grazing until after the first hard freeze (typically late November to early December).
- Allocate approximately one acre per cow for the winter grazing period, depending on expected forage yield, animal size, and supplementation strategy.
- Implement strip grazing to enhance utilization efficiency. Provide cattle access to no more than 2–3 days’ worth of forage at a time. This reduces trampling losses and encourages uniform grazing. Back fencing is generally unnecessary due to minimal regrowth during winter.
When properly managed, stockpiled tall fescue can provide a substantial amount of high-quality forage for winter grazing. This practice not only lowers feed costs but also promotes better nutrient cycling, reduces labor associated with hay feeding, and supports animal health by allowing more consistent access to forage. Producers should begin preparing now—assess pasture condition, plan nitrogen applications, and schedule grazing or mowing to optimize fall growth. With proper planning and implementation, stockpiling tall fescue can be a highly efficient component of your winter-feeding program.
